Review 20: Hell: A Hard Look at a Hard Question: The Fate of the Unrighteous in New Testament Thought (David J. Powys)

This is a fairly classic, surprisingly unscholarly, defense of annihilationism. I say unscholarly -- well, it has the language of scholarship, and it would certainly appeal to the scholarly audience. Also, it is filled with lots of academic jargon. Yet, it is deceptive, hollow, and shifty when it comes to pure reasoning. Powys goes through hell to try and overturn eternal hell. The treatment of the Rich Man and Lazarus -- totally dismissing it because it doesn't fit the presupposition, is tragic. This book is a warning -- if you bring your presuppositions to the Bible dogmatically -- you will leave with them intact. This is a fearful judgment.
