Review 22: Lincoln (David Herbert Donald)

A sympathetic and brief portrait of Lincoln. Paints the life of Lincoln in broad, but moving, strokes. Especially good is the discussion on the literary style of the Gettysburg Address (this discussion is worth the price of the book, and should be read by aspiring writers). Lincoln's faults are not covered at all, or are referred to in a cursory way. Yet, this book accomplishes what it set out to do: a fair portrait of Lincoln, focusing on his strengths.
