Review 5: The Rock That is Higher (Madeleine L'Engle)

This is partly autobiography, partly reflections on writing. L'Engle shows her colors as a not-so evangelical. Sadly (and surprisingly given that she is a writer) her reading of the Bible is a misreading. You'd think a good writer would make a better reader. Her problem is that she refuses to read the Bible on its own literary terms. She wants to cram the Bible into a foreign category (historical criticism) and judge it on her terms. This is a heresy of reading. I wonder how L'Engle would respond if her books were read like she reads the Bible? She should read Altar's Art of Biblical Narrative as penance.
